Dog Veterinary

My dog is really aggressive. He has bit me...

My dog is really aggressive. He has bit me before and other dogs. We have an 8 month old currently and I am scared something bad will happen.
JA: I'll do all I can to help. When did you first notice this fear? Does it happen all the time or only sometimes?
Customer: It happens often. I have tried to look for any triggers but I don't see anything obvious.
JA: Have you tried anything so far that helps the dog with his fear?
Customer: I have gone through trainings at Petco with him and he really wants too work. We tried praising him when he is good, muzzling, a collar that beeps ( he doesn't like the beep).
JA: And what's the dog's name and age?
Customer: Tucker, He is turning 5 on the 25th.
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: Im not sure, Maybe that he is a Treeing walker Coonhound. I read that the breed may be a reason. He has been this way since he was a puppy

I am sorry Tucker is aggressive and will bite you and other dogs.   I can understand your concerns about your 8 months old child.

I have to be honest, Tucker should not be allowed anywhere around children.   Children can so easily make sounds or gestures that a dog sees as a threat.

If you plan on keeping him, he needs to wear a basket muzzle at all times, except when he is eating.

I am not sure that the best thing for him or the family is to keep him. I can't stand the thought of something bad happening to him but I couldn't live with the thought of him hurting our baby

I think rehoming him is the best thing for your family.

Finding another home may be difficult.   It is hard to place dogs that bite, and that bite other animals.

In my experience, this will get worse, not better, with time.

I might be slow to write this is breaking me heart. Are there any options for him, I don't feel comfortable rehoming him to another family he could potentially hurt

I know this is so hard.   Rehoming him may be a danger to the new family.   Even a no-kill shelter might euthanise him because he is a danger.

I have to be honest.  I have never seen a dog like this get better in my 30+ years of being a veterinarian.   The next time he bites you it will be worse.

If he bit you in the face that bad, then I think you have only one choice.   It is too dangerous for him to be around any people except very experience behavior specialists.

This is not your fault.   He just is too dangerous to keep.   If I told you to keep him, I could not live with knowing he might hurt your child.

They don't grow out of this.   I would contact your local shelter.   See if they have any hope of rehoming him, and understand if their recommendation is to put him down.

Your veterinarian may be able to help you with euthanasia.  They may send drugs to give him to calm him at home first.
