My dog has a dry spot mid tail. Does seam to try and scratch it.
JA: I'll do all I can to help. When did you first notice the spot? Has the dog been licking or rubbing the skin?
Customer: A few days ago. Doesn’t lick or rub it.
JA: And what's the dog's name and age?
Customer: Dodger, he’s a year and 1/2
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: He’s very healthy. Do you want a photo?

Hello, I’m Dr. Michelle Brownstein. I am a licensed veterinarian with over 35 years of practice. I am not your pet’s veterinarian and cannot examine your pet, so I cannot legally provide you with any specific veterinary medical advice such as diagnosis or prescribing medication. However, I can generally speak to help you understand resources that may help you, advise you to seek medical attention, and provide support. I’m so sorry you are having problems with Dodger. You must be very worried about your precious baby. I am sorry if you had to wait for help, but I just logged on.

Please allow me a few minutes to review your case.

This could be flea allergy dermatitis or stud tail.

Stud tail is the basic term for the more scientific term, tail gland hyperplasia. Simply put, this is a dog tail infection. It is a condition that occurs in a dog's supracaudal gland, a gland located in the upper to middle half of a dog's tail.I suggest the following:

  • start effective flea control with Seresto collar or Bravecto
  • Please purchase a chlorhexidine (Hibiclens)solution at your pharmacy. Dilute with 1 part solution to 10 parts water. Cleanse the wound twice daily. If there is an infection you can purchase Vetericyn at the pet store to try to prevent infection.

If you can find a chlorhexidine scrub (soap) that will also be helpful in removing much of the debris.  Clipping the area will also help.
