JA: And what's the dog's name and age?
Customer: Oliver, he is 8 years old

Hi there, Dr. Jill Coleman here.

I'm sorry you are having digestive issues with Oliver but hopefully we can get him feeling better. Few more questions: Any vomiting? How is his overall energy level? Has he eaten today? Any unerlying medical problems? Does he take any medication?

Hi Dr. Jill! He did vomit last night. His energy is fine and he doesn't seem uncomfortable. After several hours with no poops, I gave him some canned science diet i/d digestive food.

He has diarrhea sometimes so we feed him the dry science diet digestive food always, and the canned kind when he has diarrhea but it has been a long time since that has happened.

When you start seeing the blood, it is ideal to go ahead and see your local veterinarian for a definitive diagnosis and more targeted treatment. If that isn't immediately an option, there's still a lot we can try to get him feeling better.

Few easy things to try:

(1) Rest the stomach for a full 20 hours. NO food for 20 hours. Plenty of water though, of course. This alone corrects many dogs - then start back with multiple SMALL amounts of bland food (that I/D is perfect - I'm glad you have that)

(2) Probiotic - there are good over-the-counter ones - I'll find an example and attach below

(3) Anti-diarrhea medication - like kaopectate - I prefer the ones for dogs - easier to get in them and better formulated for their gastrointestinal tract - I'll find an example and attach below

(4) Human Pepcid AC - {send me his weight & I'll send his dosage} given orally every 12 hours - this more for inappetence (not eating well, lack of appetite) and vomiting or to prevent vomiting - only as needed

Here is an example of the anti-diarrhea medication (kaolin and pectin are the active ingredients to look for - the brand doesn't matter for this one): https://www.petsmart.com/dog/dental-care-and-wellness/treatments/dog-mxandtrade-anti-diarrheal-liquid-for-dogs-5295515.html

Then here is a good probiotic called Fortiflora - he may have been on this before: https://www.petsmart.com/dog/dental-care-and-wellness/vitamins-and-supplements/purina-pro-plan-veterinary-supplements-fortiflora-dog-supplement---30-count-54160.html

Sounds good - I like that he hasn't vomited today and that his energy levels are normal so I'm hopeful he will respond nicely to the protocol above.

Should we give him the medicine while we rest his stomach?

He is tired but I think that's because he was up all night and he has no food in him really, but again, doesn't seem to be in pain and is otherwise acting normal.

Send me his weight for his Pepcid AC dosage and go ahead and get that in him first, then yes, give the other 2 today as well.
