Hi good morning!
What I thought was a cat scratch on Miles’s face on his upper eyelid might be something else.
I was cleaning his face the other day and knocked of a scab. It’s still open and pink/red. Now I noticed a smaller scabbed area over his other eye.
He’s been itching, chewing at his limbs and feet more than usual.
We’d gone camping 2 weeks ago and I bathed him as soon as we got home.
Ideas?
He does have an appt today that I’m glad I made earlier this week because his one eyelid doesn’t look better.
Thanks Deb!

Good morning, Kim.

Sorry to hear that Miles Davis is having some "different" issues from what he normally does:(    It sounds as if he may be having/reacting in an allergic way if he's been itchier than normal especially on his face, legs and feet.  While dogs can experience itchy eyes like we do, they don't usually rub their faces enough to cause actually scratches.  However, having said that, I suppose his dewclaw might cause some damage if he rubbed hard enough.  it's also possible that he's developed conjunctivitis which may require topical treatment to resolve.

Normally, I suggest otc Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at a dose of 1 mg per  pound of body weight twice a day but since he has a vet appointment anyway, they may decide to prescribe something different than this.  It certainly can't hurt if you wanted to see if it might provide some relief prior to his appointment although sedation can be seen which I think you know.

Thank you! Do you suppose he’s having severe allergies?
I haven’t changed his diet at all. He did eat kibble for 2-3 weeks like 2+ months ago but just didn’t continue. He’s only eating ground Turkey and White rice.
I’ll let you know what doc says later today and thank you so very much again for your kind help!
Hope alll is well in your world!

Kim,

I definitely think seasonal allergies may be the explanation for his itchiness although sometimes it's hard to distinguish between pollens floating around in the air which are inhaled versus food as the culprit for the symptoms that we see.  If had to choose, though, I'd probably think pollens are the cause.

I'm glad that I happened to be online and saw your question since I'm always glad to help if I can:)  Definitely keep me posted since I'll be curious to know what your vet thinks.

Good morning!
Wanted to report back. Miles got a cytopoint injection for allergies/seasonal dermatitis and terramycin ointment for both eyelids.
You nailed it again!
Thank you for your kindness always.

Kim,

Thanks for the update and the picture; doesn't he look cozy:)))

Allergies have been pretty bad this year so not too surprised that this was the diagnosis.  Better than food allergy, I guess, since his symptoms will only be occasional, hopefully.

Take care, Deb
