My dog has had diarrhea for the last 4 days and today I noticed there is blood in it, and he has vomited twice today
JA: I'm so sorry the dog isn't feeling well, but those details will be very helpful for the Expert. Could he have eaten anything unusual?
Customer: No, we watch him outside as he is a bichon/ chihuahua and we live in Canada, very cold out this season.
JA: What's the dog's name and age?
Customer: Cricket and he's 4 yrs old. We rescued him from a hoarding situation and have had him for 2 months.
JA: Is there anything else the Vet should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: I noticed after his bath and a hair trim one of his ears has a bad mite infestation

In a dog this age vomiting and diarrhea is usually related to something they licked, chewed or swallowed. There are a few things you can try at home. You can give 1/2 teaspoon Pepto Bismol every 8 hours as needed to coat the stomach and for the diarrhea. You can also give 5 mg Pepcid AC or Prilosec OTC per 20 pounds body weight once a day as needed to settle the stomach. If the meds stay down 2-3 hours I would offer a bland diet of chicken and rice in small meals. If the meds do not stay down or the vomiting persists, an exam with your vet would be warranted. Dehydration is a major concern in dogs this size when vomiting and diarrhea occur.

Okay, I will try these methods. How long should I wait to notice a response to these treatments before considering taking him to the vet?

You should see significant improvement within 24 hours. If the meds do not stay down or there is no improvement, get him an appointment.
