I received a Job Offer from a Job advertised...

Resolved • Response time 2 minutes

7 Dec 2021

I received a Job Offer from a Job advertised on ZipRecruiter and I'm a little suspicious it may not be legitimate. It's for NEOTech, is there any record this may be legitimate or a fraudulent "fake" job offer?
JA: What state are you in? It matters because laws vary by location.
Customer: Louisiana
JA: What steps have you taken so far?
Customer: Responded to an online Interview, Job Offer, and they sent me a Check to Deposit to purchase initial materials to begin the job. That's when I became suspicious, but so far all of the information I've provided was a part of my online Resume and I didn't provide them my banking information, but feel they may still be able to obtain it it the check is negotiated, uncertain about this last detail.
JA: Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured that they'll be able to help you.
Customer: Is there a fee for this inquiry?

Not really, because the check they gave you is fake.  It's not a real check.

So they gave you a bunch of money, then they ask for a portion of it back.

You send a portion back, then the check gets returned, and your account is in the negative.

  • Never bank on a “cleared” check. No legitimate potential employer will ever send you a check and then tell you to send on part of the money, or buy gift cards with it. That’s a fake check scam. The check will bounce, and the bank will want you to repay the amount of the fake check.

I wondered seriously...I told him that none of it was available at this time. So as long as I don't continue, I'm okay except for a loss of three hours?

They will get pretty aggressive with you about sending them money at some point.  Just ignore them or block them.  They may even start threatening you.  Not uncommon.

Thank you. I will contact my bank in the a.m. just because. I appreciate your insight and should have trusted my instincts sooner. Just thought the Zip Recruiter platform might have filtered this a bit...not. There was some language alerts that I should have ended the conversation. I copied the entire Skype convo to sort of protect myself. Thank you.
