They want me to collect Michigan IDs from anyone who comes into the building who does caregiving services for a resident.
The building is an independent living building for seniors.

Understood! They can do this.Legally, they can ask people for ID to enter, and it's actually a common practice. There is no right to enter onto someone else's land and dictate the terms of what you do. If they want ID, they can demand you give it.

Have you planned on what you would tell visitors as the reason why you're doing this?

Correct! It's not a privacy issue. There is no right to privacy on someone else's land, even if you're a caregiver. Legally, the business has the right to ask or deny entry for anyone. It's a common practice, and I don't expect anyone is going to have a huge issue particularly if you give some reasonable explanation, like resident safety or something.

If you're concerned about the nuts and bolts on how to do it, management needs to help. You can also use your best judgment.

Putting up a sign and reminding people is often the easiest way:)
